The ITU was founded as the International Telegraph Union in Paris on May 17, 1865 and changed its name to the International Telecommunication Union on January 1, 1934. In 1947 the ITU became an agency in the United Nations.
The ITU is the sole regulating institution with power to regulate the transfer of data throughout the world. The tasks of the ITU are:
- Maintain and foster rational use of telecommunications and to offer technical assistance.
- Promote and improve efficient use of technical equipment and operations.
- Coordinate and promote a positive world environment to achieve the first two tasks.
