Flowers add colour into our lives. Their soothing fragrance can easily dispel a restless mood into a cheerful one. Indeed, the very atmosphere of a room changes with the presence of these scented beauties.
Malaysia is renowned for her variety of both common and rare scented flowers. They either grow wildly in villages or are cultivated in gardens by urban dwellers. These beautiful scented flowers, which are an integral part of our lives, can be found growing in public gardens, homes, along the roadside and highways throughout the country.
Malaysia, realising the need to preserve the environment, prevent pollution as well as to beautify her surroundings, has embarked on a mission to awaken her citizens to the rich and varied floral beauty available in the country and to put it to good use.
As it is, there is already a growing awareness and appreciation amongst Malaysians for scented flowers, and people from all walks of life - housing and infrastructure developers to home owners alike are encouraged to plant floral trees where appropriate.
There is also an increasing number of Malaysians keen on the study of local flora and fauna. As a matter of fact, our local higher institute of leaning provide excellent research facilities complete with nurseries filled with varying species of local flora and fauna for students to learn and observe.
Amongst the local scented flora that is widely seen around the country are the Cempaka (Michelia champaca), the Tanjung (Mimusops elengi), the Penaga Lilin (Mesua ferrea) and the Kenanga (Cananga odorata).
