The Kebaya Nyonya (traditional blouse dress worn by women) first appeared only in the early 20th century. The early versions features rather simple embroidery work, but later, especially from the 1960s onwards, a more exquisite and intricate embroidery began to emerge. While the early kebayas are hand sewn, the Nyonya kebaya today is embroidered using the sewing machine with flower motives being the favourite theme.

The miniature sheet featuring a Nyonya Kebaya has won the UNESCO Award of Excellence for Handicraft 2012. The stamp within the miniature sheet feature a composition of Malaysian fruit, with holes cut on the paper resembling the embroidery.

This issue coincides with the 26th Baba Nyonya International Convention 2013 which was held from 29 November to 1 December 2013 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The festival welcomed delegates from Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia and all over the world for 3 days and 2 nights of Peranakan music, dance, culture and fellowship.

The Kebaya was the uniform of stewardess of Malaysia-Singapore Airlines and still retained by Singapore Airlines and Malaysia Airlines after the company has been split into.

Peranakan is an ethnic group that originally came from the mixture of Malay women and Chinese men. Baba referred to a male members of this group while Nyonya to the female members.

MINIATURE SHEET CUT-OUT

The miniature is considered unique due to the fact that it was cut-out to create a sillouhette looking like the original blouse.
