The final stamp issue before Singapore merged with the Malayan and Borneo territories to form Malaysia was a single stamp issued to commemorate the South East Asia Cultural Festival. Even in those early years when Singapore was struggling to climb the economic ladder and take its first steps towards nation building, it did not ignore the importance of its rich cultural heritage. Indeed a brand new National Theatre built with funds from the Government and donations from the public was one of the most visible reflection of importance placed on cultural developments then. The issue therefore also commemorated the opening of the new National Theatre.
