In general, there are over 1,000 species of butterflies in Malaysia. Although the majority of butterflies are found in the primeval forest, they can be found in nearly every type of habitat.

Most people are confused by the difference between butterflies and moths. The main physical difference between the two species is the antennae or feelers. Most butterflies have feelers that are threadlike and the tips are gradually thickened at the end. On the other hand, the feelers of the moth are feathery. The other main difference is that butterflies generally rest with their wings closed in an upright position whereas moths rest with their wings in a horizontal position.

Butterflies feed primarily on nectar from flowers and play an important ecological role as one the major agents of pollination.

Although butterflies are fairly small in size, the variety of brilliant colours and interesting patterns on the wings of the butterflies make them the most glamorous and magnificient of all insects. The graceful flight and diverse patterns formed by their brightly coloured wings have made butterfly watching a popular hobby.
